DER TINTENFISCH (2019)

for mixed ensemble

DER TINTENFISCH is a tribute to the late Paul the Octopus, who correctly predicted all of Germany’s results at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It received its premiere in January 2019 at the JdP Music Building, Oxford by Ensemble ISIS.

When Paul correctly predicted that Germany would be knocked out of the World Cup in the Semi Final by eventual winners Spain, Paul received a number of death threats in the form of recipes for cooking octopus.

The piece uses a variety of graphic scoring methods, including decision trees (as developed in untitled (ANIMA) and others), gestural indications and open scoring techniques. The piece is a somewhat ritualistic celebration of life, football, and everything in between.
